Living on an animal sanctuary, I experience so much unconditional love. When you rescue an animal and manage to save its life, you will have a friend forever. Rescuing has been a big part of my life for many years and I am so happy we are able to provide safe refuge for the critters that come here. Their stories of recovery are always the desired outcome. We concentrate on saving not selling, so most that come here never leave for another home.
One story close to my heart is a little mama beagle/dachshund mix with four newborn puppies and a broken pelvis. I named her Dolly and the first time she and I made eye contact I fell in love. Her story of rescue goes like this.
Dolly was about to have her puppies and instead of having a safe place to give birth she was thrown out in a ditch; my guess is that’s when her Pelvis was broken leaving her paralyzed and unable to walk. Dolly had her puppies in the ditch and then a thunderstorm came, and the ditch began to fill with water.
Dolly managed to drag her puppies one by one to a barn across the highway. Her paws were is a minister, Spiritual Life Wake up Women. To learn more about Karen visit When Dolly and her four baby boys arrived at the sanctuary and I took her in my arms for the first time, bless her heart, she just gave the biggest sigh of relief; I think she knew she was safe. First and foremost was increasing Dolly’s milk supply, so for two weeks she had homemade everything, she ate well. Then I would carry her outside and let her do her business under the big tree.
When Dolly was rescued she was immediately carried to the vet for a once over.
The x-ray of her Pelvis showed a clean break. I felt could be repaired, but surgery was not an option. Her puppies were too young to take her from them. So in the meantime, as we waited to wean the boys, I decided to start my own healing regimen on Dolly’s broken pelvis and did my best to heal her before the surgery.
I mixed up a concoction of CBD oil, coconut oil, and Epsom Salt into a paste. Then three times a day I would lay Dolly down and I would just massage the paste into her back from the top of her spine all the way to the tip of her little bob tail. Seven days into the treatment she met me at the door of her room when I went to feed her; she was hobbling on three legs but at least she was walking. Within six weeks Dolly was on all four legs getting stronger every day. We were able to start her heartworm treatments using natural products, had her spayed, and watched her personality that she was born to have, come to life.
All her boys were adopted out and one came back to us when his adopted parents got deployed. We were going to adopt him out again, but when Dolly realized one of her baby boys was back she was so excited. Right then, I knew he was going nowhere. Dolly and her boy, Rowdy have been with us for a couple of years now.
Physically, you would never know that Dolly had even been thrown out of a car when she was about to have her puppies. She is very protective of us and when someone else comes over she is the first to let us know that we have a non-family member on the property. Rowdy, Dolly’s boy has never known anything but love, One of the dogs managed to escape when the door was opened so we could clean their stall and we couldn’t catch her. One day we were able to tranquilize her so we could take her to the vet for her spay, and when we returned with her we put her back in the stall. She escaped again but she never really left the farm she always stayed around so we just let her be. She would go with us when we went riding, she loved that, but she never came in close enough to get loving or treats. It’s like she is always on the outside looking into a life that she could have but is too afraid. I know people like that too.
Critters are so forgiving, but when they can’t forget something, they will forever be hampered by long-lasting effects of the incident or series of incidents like abuse, starvation, or abandonment. It takes time and lots of love and care to get some of them over the threshold to the life they were meant to live. It works the same for people a well.
I have learned so much about people while dealing with critters. It’s not just critters that are abandoned, abused, neglected, its people also. God gave humanity dominion over the earth and everything on it, in it, under it, over it, but He did not mean for us to control all living things, He meant for us to be the care-takers and good stewards of the planet.
We have some sad stories, but we have lots of happy tales to tell. If every family that had just one dog would adopt another dog or cat, before long we would have no homeless dogs and cats. Problem solved. How about the children who are in the orphanages why not adopt and give the children a home and family?
